The Society welcomes membership by all individuals interested in Western American botany. Membership dues support the publication of Madroño, the leading botanical journal in Western North America, and our grants and education programs. All individual members receive Madroño online, as well as the Society’s digital newsletter Nemophila. Memberships are sold in 12-month intervals. Subscriptions to Madroño are no longer available for institutions after 2025; however, institutions can access Madroño by subscribing to BioOne Complete.
We are pleased to offer discounts for multi-year renewals by individuals. Current membership categories and rates for one year are as follows:
Regular: $50
Family: $55
Emeritus (for retired faculty and other professionals, requires 10 years of prior CalBotSoc membership): $35
Student (seven years maximum eligibility; must provide copy of student ID or advisor’s signature): $20
Postdoc: $35
Life: $1000
Printed Madroño is no longer available.

Madroño Available Online-Only Beginning 2026
Madroño will be available online-only beginning in 2026 to individual members. This change will allow us to improve the journal with more color figures and faster publication times while reducing our carbon footprint and saving money on printing and mailing. Members may access Madroño online on our website here. Information about institutional subscriptions to Madroño online can be found at https://bioone.org/subscribe. Please contact membership@calbotsoc.org with any questions.

All student members can apply for Paul Silva Student Research Grants. Additionally, student and other members can apply for Annetta Carter Memorial Fund grants (for Baja California research).
The first year of membership is free for undergraduate and graduate students, postdocs, and recently hired faculty. This one-year membership comes with on-line access to Madroño and all other membership benefits. Write to our Membership Chair to be registered for your free first-year membership.
Student Members are eligibile to apply for travel support to attend our biennial Graduate Student Symposia.
Build your resumé by reviewing manuscripts for Madroño or by writing summaries of Madroño articles for a broad readership through our Botany Ambassador Program.
